When a tooth has broken or a hole develops, it is important that the tooth is repaired to prevent further damage to the tooth. Often it is possible to repair the tooth with a filling and your dentist will discuss the options before work begins.
Traditionally back teeth were repaired with amalgam, a silvery metal material which darkens with age. Today we usually use a tooth-coloured material which blends in well and bonds better to the tooth. This process takes longer and costs a little more as a result.
Your dentist will make recommendations as to which materials are appropriate to fill your tooth but ultimately it is up to you to choose which material is used.
Tooth-coloured filling materials can also be used to repair small chips in front teeth and to sculpt teeth into a more pleasing shape with a mini-makeover.
