Sportsguards, Nightguards and Retainers at St. Giles Dental Newtown
The team at St Giles can supply a variety of removable covers to protect your teeth in various situations.
Sports guards
Sports injuries to the front teeth can lead to tooth loss and permanent damage, so wearing a sports guard is vital to prevent this happening. Some people choose to rely on a product purchased from the internet or sports shop to protect their teeth but these off-the-shelf products can be difficult to fit and uncomfortable to wear. Sadly, they may not even protect the teeth properly if the guard doesn’t stay in place on contact with a hard object.
A custom-made sports guard offers superior protection because it is made to closely fit the wearer and unlikely to be easily dislodged. The guards come in varying thicknesses depending on the sport to be played. A well-fitting guard will also give some protection against concussion as the rubbery surface cushions the teeth when they are forced together.
Sports guards come in a wide variety of colours and designs so there’s bound to be something that you like – please ask for further details or pricing.
Nightguards
Some people clench or grind their teeth at night which can cause several problems:
- Excessive tooth wear
- Painful jaw joints and muscles
- Headaches
We make a variety of covers for patients to wear at night to protect their teeth or alleviate symptoms, please ask for more details.
Retainers
After orthodontic treatment has finished, patients are supplied with clear plastic covers to wear at night to prevent their teeth from returning to their original position. After a time, these become worn and can crack meaning that they no longer do their job. We can supply replacement retainers similar to the originals or a more durable product made from a multilayer acrylic which should reduce the frequency that replacements are required.
