Dental Check-ups & X-rays at St Giles Dental Newtown

Every new patient who joins the practice will have a baseline examination to check the health of their teeth and gums. We record what teeth are there and any restorations present; we also take x-rays of your teeth at this appointment when appropriate.

Everyone knows that it is important to have your teeth and gums checked at regular intervals to make sure that they are healthy but what is your dentist actually looking for?

We look to make sure that:

  • There are no areas of decay
  • All fillings, crowns etc are still in good condition and the edges are tight against the tooth
  • The teeth are not wearing away excessively
  • The gums are healthy and will note any areas where gum disease is present
  • The teeth are being cleaned effectively
The tongue, lips and rest of the soft tissue in the mouth are healthy with no abnormalities
  • There are no lumps, bumps or other abnormalities on the face or neck
  • The jaw joints are functioning properly

Hopefully your dentist won’t find any problems but if they do, they will then discuss the findings with you, agree a plan of action and give you an estimate of cost. If you need more advanced care, we will discuss your options with you and may refer you to one of our specialist colleagues.

Check-up intervals can range from 6 months to 2 years but most people are seen once every 9 months to a year.

We recommend that we check your teeth with x-rays at regular intervals. Your dentist will advise on how often this should be done but this is usually every 2-3 years. Where x-rays are taken, they will be included in the price of the check-up.
